Who we are

LayerNomics (“we”, “us”) is a UK-based 3D printing filament price comparison and print-cost calculation service available at layernomics.com. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach us at hello@layernomics.com for any privacy matter.

What data we collect

Account data

If you create an account, we store your email address and an encrypted (hashed) password, managed by our authentication provider. We also store your account role, any membership tier, and the settings you create — such as saved calculator profiles and filament inventory. You provide this data directly when you register and use the service.

Price submissions

If you submit a filament price, we store the submission details you provide — material, brand, vendor, price, and any product or source URLs. We do not require your name or contact details to submit a price. Submissions are linked to your account if you are signed in, so we can attribute and review them.

Usage events

We record limited usage events to understand how the site is used — for example which buy-links are clicked, which browse filters are applied, and when the calculator is run. These events record the type of action and, where relevant, a product category such as a filament material. They are not used to build a profile of you.

Analytics and performance data

With your consent, we use privacy-focused analytics to measure page views, referring sites, approximate location (country level), and device and browser type, plus performance metrics such as page load speed. See the Cookies and analytics section below.

Technical logs

Our hosting infrastructure automatically records standard server logs including IP addresses, browser type, and pages requested. These are retained briefly for security, fraud prevention, and diagnostics.

How and why we use it

We use your data only for the following purposes, each with a lawful basis under UK GDPR:

  • To operate your account — authenticating you, storing your settings and saved data. Lawful basis: performance of a contract.
  • To run the price database — accepting, reviewing, and publishing community price submissions. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in maintaining an accurate, useful service.
  • To understand and improve the site — usage events and, with consent, analytics. Lawful basis: consent for analytics cookies; legitimate interests for anonymous internal usage events.
  • To keep the service secure — technical logs and abuse prevention. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in security.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Cookies and analytics

We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies. Essential cookies — such as the session cookie that keeps you signed in — are always active because the site cannot work without them. Analytics and performance measurement are optional and only run if you give consent through our cookie banner. You can change your choice at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer. Our Cookie Policy lists every cookie and what it does.

Who processes your data

We use a small number of trusted providers to run the service. Each acts as our data processor:

  • Supabase — database and authentication. Stores your account data and submissions. Hosted in the European Union.
  • Vercel — website hosting, and (with your consent) analytics and performance measurement. Processes technical data such as IP addresses to serve the site.

We only share data with these providers to the extent needed to run the service, under contracts that require them to protect it.

International transfers

Your account data and submissions are stored within the European Union. Some technical processing by our hosting provider may take place outside the UK and EU, including in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer is protected by appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or Standard Contractual Clauses, as required by UK data protection law.

How long we keep data

  • Account data — for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep it longer by law.
  • Price submissions — published prices may be retained as part of the public database even after an account is closed, but are de-linked from your identity.
  • Usage events — retained in aggregate; they contain no direct identifiers.
  • Technical logs — retained for a short period (typically up to 30 days) then deleted.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Have inaccurate data corrected
  • Have your data erased (“right to be forgotten”)
  • Restrict or object to how we process your data
  • Receive your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent

To exercise any of these, email hello@layernomics.com. We will respond within one month. You also have the right to complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you are unhappy with how we have handled your data.

Security

Passwords are stored in hashed form and never visible to us. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to personal data is limited to what is needed to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data and will notify you and the ICO of any breach where required by law.

Children

LayerNomics is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. We will change the “last updated” date at the top, and for significant changes we will provide a more prominent notice. Continued use of the site after changes means you accept the updated policy.
